This workshop has the primary aim of developing transgender specific knowledge and expertise among local care providers in an effort to foster effective, respectful and competent practice for engaging trans children and teens, and their families in mental health, health and social service settings. This workshop will enhance participants’ understanding of transgender and gender diverse experiences among children (binary and nonbinary), as well as, clinical, legal, medical, or social issues associated with living authentically and/or transitioning during childhood. Discussion will focus on understanding the specific risks encountered by transgender children and teens, as well as on identifying and harnessing strength and resilience among trans youth. Affirmative Practice Strategies including: creating safe and affirming contexts, engaging in affirming conversations, supporting youths' autonomy and authenticity, supporting parents/families, and engaging in trans specific advocacy will be explored.
